The cover honors the famous balloonist John Wise. The photo shows a

hot air balloon launching in Penn Square in Lancaster, PA in the mid-1800s.

Aeronaut John Wise made 463 hot air balloon ascents in 44 years.

He missed out on the Civil War Battle of 1st Bull Run when the Union Army

unit in their haste moving the inflated balloon, ripped it in the roadside trees.

After the war, unfortunately, John Wise, a passenger and his balloon

"Pathfinder" were lost over Lake Michigan on September 28, 1879.

Seller also has a portrait cover for Balloonist John Wise and a cover

for Professor Thaddeus S.C. Lowe. Check out my other items!
