الموضوع : تتناول رواية "الكبرياء والهوى" ثلاثة موضوعات هي: الحب والزواج، الصراع بين طبقة النبلاء والطبقة الارستقراطية بالإضافة إلى الأخلاق والسلوك الذي يمثلها. وقد تحدثت فيها عن القرى الإنجليزية الصغيرة مثل تلك القرى التي عاشت فيها الكاتبة نفسها. وكان موضوع روايتها: الفرح والحزن، الأمل والخوف، النجاح والفشل في الحياة اليومية للناس مثل أولئك الناس الذين تعرفهم جين. فعائلة السيد بينيت في هذه الرواية تشبه عائلة جين اوستن نفسها في الكثير من المواضيع. وجين أوستن تشبه شخصية إليزابيث بينيت إلى حدّ كبير. يذكر بان جين عندما انتهت من الفصل الأخير من كتابها كبرياء وهوي كانت قد بلغت الثالثة والعشرين من عمرها وحمل والدها الكتاب وذهب به إلي إحدي دور النشر وطالت غيبته واستبد القلق بزوجته وابنائه وعاد اخيرا والتف حوله ابناؤه يسألون في قلق ماذا حدث كانت جين اكثرهم قلقا اشعلت له نار المدفأة وقدمت له حساء ساخنا وعندما بدأ الأب يحس بالدفء نظر الي جين وقال ولكنك لم تسأليني عن كتابك يا جين قالت ولم السؤال أنا أعرف النتيجة مقدماً انه لم يثر اهتمام أحد لا تيأس فسوف يبحثون هم عنك وابتسم الأب في ارتياح فقد كان يشفق عليها من الصدمة
