Twin Winton Hillbilly Mountain Man
7 ½” Tall Ceramic Mug
Beer Stein w/Figural Handle
Vintage 1940s/1950s
Pasadena, CA

What a sweet find! This 7 ½” tall ceramic mug or beer stein is from the Hillbilly Mountain Man collection from Twin Winton of Pasadena, CA, circa 1940s/50s. The stein looks like a wooden beer barrel or moonshine bucket with a figural handle of a skinny mountain man with full beard and bright clothes leaning on the barrel. He has black hair and beard, polka dot shirt and blue pants with yellow belt.
The base measures 4” and is incised in cursive with:
Twin
Winton
Pasadena Cal
Below the incise mark, in black marker, is the letter M.
Twin brothers Don and Ross Winton started their pottery works in 1936 in the family garage, creating whimsical animal figurines. In the summer of 1936, Don took an after school job with Helen Burke, who managed a gift shop at Busch Gardens in Pasadena. The brothers partner with Helen and open their first professional business as Burke-Winton Studio.
When Busch Gardens closed in 1937, Don and Ross end their partnership with Helen and open Twin Winton Studios in December.
With the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese December 7, 1941, America enters the War; early 1942, the brothers close the factory and join the Armed Forces. After the war, they re-established their business in South Pasadena in 1946 as Twin Winton Ceramics, and introduced the Hillbilly mugs (based on a popular cartoon of the time) in 1947.
The business moved a number of times around Pasadena, to Tujunga, back to Pasadena, then El Monte and finally San Juan Capistrano where they closed the doors in 1976.
This mug is in excellent vintage condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing that I can see. It would be a valuable addition to a Twin Winton collection or as a unique piece to enjoy your favorite beverage.
