As to the Construction of the

Boston and Maine Railroad Bridge

Over the Charles River.

By James Hayward, The Engineer of that work.

Published: Boston, Eastburn’s Press

1849 [First Edition]

A fascinating Statement from the Engineer of the Construction of the Boston and Maine Railroad Bridge Over the Charles River responding to a Report of a Committee of the Legislature, State of Massachusetts.

From the text (in part): “…. As I was the Engineer and constructing agent of that work, and as some of the statements in that Report seem to me to be liable to misconstruction, from which indeed, certain inferences have been drawn injurious the Boston and Maine Railroad, I as leave to state such facts in relation thereto, as are within my own knowledge, but with entire respect for that Committee. …” etc., etc.
