Strathpeffer Junction: Home of the Original & Best ringfield motor upgrade kits.

We only use high-quality, branded motors and the very best materials. Every one of our products is vigorously tested before being offered to the public and every motor is checked by hand before shipping. We provide the most detailed assembly instructions and support videos on the market and offer a no-quibble refund in the unlikely event you're not happy. Our 12V motor kits are the only ringfield motor kits to feature a high-quality motor capable of DC and DCC use out of the box and all of our adaptors are made using precision European plastics that can withstand the rigours of railway modelling for the long haul.

PLEASE NOTE: The motors currently supplied in these 12V kits are brand new but were supplied to us with very short wires. Where necessary, we have soldered on extensions to make them easier for customers to wire up and you may therefore see a short length of heat shrink covering the solder joint.

This listing is for a brand new OO Gauge Hornby ringfield motor conversion kit for UK outline Bo-Bo diesels and DMUs (see compatibility list below).

It's one of our most popular Hornby ringfield conversion motor kit and includes the following components:

Unlike some cheaper kits available from other sellers, this kit uses a high-quality, high-torque motor with internal components designed for up to 14Vdc; so it's capable of handling DC and DCC track voltages. No diodes are required for either DC or DCC usage, and CV5/CV6 programming is optional (depending on your preferred running characteristics).

As with all of our Hornby kits, the conversion process can be fully reversible depending how you choose to install it, so the old ringfield (pancake) motor can be reinstalled at any time. The adaptor is also reusable, meaning the motor, adaptor and/or gear can be replaced with ease, if ever the need arises.

A note about postage

We are happy to combine postage for multiple orders and most listings should do this automatically. If postage doesn't automatically combine, please drop us a message before you pay and we'll sort out a revised invoice. If you've already paid, drop us a line and we can refund the extra.

Compatibility

Our HA2 adaptor is designed for use with most Bo-Bo models. It should be compatible with a wide range of ringfield motor versions of the UK outline models, but we cannot guarantee compatibility with every model. The following list is provided for guidance – if there is any doubt, please contact us to discuss your requirements before placing an order.

Note: Hornby produced a wide range of ringfield models, some with subtle differences in design, and we have been unable to test every single variation in person. These lists are based on both physical testing of models and careful assessment of photographs for those we do not have access to. They are not exhaustive. We have developed the adaptor to accommodate many of the different different casting details found on ringfield models.  However, very occasionally light filing of the adaptor or the bogie may be required to perfect the fit.

Hornby APT: Due to its slim bogie and bogie fascia, sometimes it may be necessary to trim off 1-2mm from the end of the motor shaft in order to prevent it fouling on the bogie fascia. This is almost always necessary if you opt to remove the brass bushing, however please do a dry fit first to check. Trimming can be done using a cutting disc on a Dremel rotary tool, taking multiple small cuts and allowing the shaft to cool in between.

Please refer to our detailed installation booklet for specific fitting instructions. You can download that from our website - details on the card that comes with your order.

Installation

With these adaptors, installation is easy. They enable you to quickly replace aged ringfield motors in OO gauge models with CD-type motors, without the need for any messing around with glue or fiddly shaft alignment. The adaptor ensures that everything is lined up and ready to go!

This kit requires no permanent adaptation to be made to the motor bogie (although the brass bushing may have to be removed in some cases) and therefore the original ringfield (pancake) motor can be reinstalled at any time; the motor, adaptor and/or gear can be replaced if ever the need arises.

DCC/Digital Use

Our upgrade kits can work really well on a DCC layout, however we strongly recommend that a decoder with CV2/CV5/CV6 functionality is fitted. These functions will enable the starting voltage, top and mid speeds of the motor to be fine tuned and make prototypical speeds and running more achievable. In most cases, it will also negate the need for a diode voltage dropper to be installed, although as with most decoder installations, you may still have to spend some time fine tuning CV values to get best possible performance.

Altering CVs is almost always a case of trial and error and will be influenced significantly by the locomotive type, length of rake, track layout (incl. the number of inclines) and your own preferences for running characteristics. We strongly advise you to back up your decoder's CV settings before making changes and to change one CV at a time, then test; changing too many CVs at a time may confuse the overall picture.

Usage Advice

1.  Our replacement motors are high quality DC motors designed for CD/DVD drives. The output from a DCC decoder or a DC controller can sometimes exceed their voltage rating depending on how hard hard the loco is being worked. Whilst our own tests (and those of many others before us) show that these motors are capable of handling voltages higher than their rating, in order to avoid motor burn-out, prolong motor life and achieve prototypical speeds, you may wish to consider:

2.  With all CD-style motor conversions, it is good practice to: i) maintain very high speeds for relatively short periods only, ii) keep running on steep inclines to a minimum, iii)  avoid coupled up with excessively long rakes of coaches/wagons, and iv) where less robust 10mm motors are fitted, resist the temptation to fit additional weight to the loco.

3.  It is recommended that locomotives fitted with our 3D printed adaptor kits are not run for more than an hour continuously. This is principally to reduce wear on the motor, through a build up in heat.

4. We recommend that locomotives fitted with can-style CD motors are:

Disclaimer

We can accept no liability or responsibility for any damage or injury occurring from the installation and use of our motor replacement kits. Installation requires modifications and the use of tools, some of which have the potential to damage you and/or you models, as well as other components and equipment. Users must not commence work unless they are confident that they have the skills and experience necessary to complete it successfully, and install these kits and undertake work to their models at their own risk.  This kit currently uses a D/V 13.0 motor with internal components designed for up to 18Vdc.
