A handsome large and heavy ale jug.

Bought as circa1800 with probable London Pottery roots - I don’t know much about these wares and we are only selling to down size some items we have collected over the years.

SALTGLAZE Stoneware.

It’s a lovely big size, it has a nice rounded body and it is extremely tactile.

Size is approx. 9 inches x 7.75 x 7.5.

Very heavy object. 1.6 kg.

On the inside you can see this was hand thrown and each element applied by hand to the jug - it’s a lovely piece of skilled craftsmanship.

No makers mark but this has very high quality relief sprigs with an impressive amount of detailing. There is a fox hunt scene playing out around the bottom with hunters on horseback and a pack of hounds chasing the fox. Above this, the motifs are referred to as ‘topers’ in this case these are rural motifs with trees, haystacks, and pictorial sprigs known as the thinker and the smoker. The larger gentleman to the underside of the jug lip is ‘Toby Fillpot’.

The wide handle is finished with an ornate decoration consisting a strap with simulated screw heads and various over lapping leaves.

Some damage but he still displays well.

Please note we pack items really well, and that the postage we charge reflects the cost of high density boxes that we buy in for the safe transport of ceramics, and secure packing. eBay takes 20% of everything, even the postage and packing.

Overseas - this just is very big and heavy and to send overseas would be hugely expensive. If you do want a quote please get in touch.
