This is a copper prayer wheel with a wooden handle.  It is about 8" long.  Circling around the outside on two lines is the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum.  The top has three turquoise colored beads.  These prayer wheels are handmade and may have subtle variations from the one in the photo.  

Tibetan prayer wheels contain a rolled up scroll printed with prayers, the most common being Om Mani Padme Hum.  A prayer wheel can easily contain forty thousand mantras, and so, a few minutes of turning the prayer wheel will repeat the mantra millions of times.  The act of spinning the wheel (in a clockwise direction so the mantra will pass before your eyes in the direction you would be reading it) brings merit and blessings.  These blessings radiate out into the environment, filling the world and the heavens with sacred invocations and blessings for the benefit of all.
