AUTOR
Gabriel Biel (1420-1495),
auch „der letzte Scholastiker“ genannt, war Domprediger in Mainz und später Propst der Priester-Kongregation vom gemeinsamen Leben in Butzbach und später in Urach, wo er in hohem Maße das Vertrauen Herzog Eberhards von Württemberg genoss. Er war einer der Mitbegründer der Universität Tübingen und war dort ab 1484 Professor der Theologie und Philosophie.

BESCHREIBUNG
Erste autorisierte Ausgabe dieser Erläuterungen des Heiligen Messkanons der Universität Tübingen. Ein äußerst interessantes und attraktives Inkunabel-Exemplar dieses seltenen Tübinger Frühdruckes, dessen Inhalte Luther eingehend studierte.
Sehr schöner, breitrandiger und sauberer Druck, gebunden in einem originalen, spätgotischen Augsburger Meister-Einband.
Darüber hinaus wartet die Inkunabel noch mit interessanter Provenienz auf; das Werk stammt einst aus der Klosterschule Altötting.
AUSSTATTUNG
Zweispaltige, gotische Type in 53 Zeilen. Etliche in Rot eingemalte Initialen. Ein Textholzschnitt „Christus am Kreuz“ auf Blatt f3. Dieser zeigt Christus am Kreuz mit Maria, Johannes und dem Longinus, die Lanze in die Seite Christi stoßend. Es ist dies wahrscheinlich der erste Holzschnitt in einer datierten Tübinger Inkunabel. Der Holzschnitt in typisch gotischer Darstellung. Rückseitig die T-igitur Initiale in Rot koloriert und mit gewundener Schlange.

EINBAND
Originaler, spätgotischer Einband aus einer Augsburger Werkstatt der Zeit (Kyriss 86, Tafel 175, Abb. 1-2, 4 und 6). Blindgeprägtes Kalbsleder. Rechteckig und diagonal verlaufende Streicheisenlinien. Drei echte Bünde. Schließen entfernt. Guter Zustand mit stärkeren Gebrauchsspuren. Rücken mit Lederfehlstelen. Gelenke gebrochen. Bindung ist jedoch noch fest und stabil. In den Deckeln stärkere Wurmlöcher und Wurmgänge.
Klein-Folio: 28 x 20,5 x 8,5 cm.
ZUSTAND
Guter Zustand. Sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar. Wunderbar fühlbarer Druck. Erste fünf Blatt mit Randläsuren und leicht fingerfleckig. Erste und letzte Lagen mit diversen Wurmlöchern. Durchgehend 2-3 kleinere Wurmlöcher im Textbereich. Keine Risse, Ausrisse, Fehlstellen oder Reparaturen.
Klosterschule Altötting - handschriftlicher Besitzereintrag „Ad Bibliothec. Eccles. Colleg. Oeting. Veteris“ auf Blatt a2r sowie das eingebrannte Monogramm „O“ auf dem Vorderdeckel.
Ausgeschiedenes Exemplar der Königlichen Bibliothek München.

DESCRIPTION
First edition of the publication of two of Biel's theological treatises at Tübingen on the same date suggests that he emained an influential theologian after his death, one of his readers being the young Martin Luther.
Johann Otmar was printer to Tübingen University from 1498 to 1501. However, he printed this work in type brought from Reutlingen, where he had worked for the much longer period of 1482 to 1495.
Two-column, gothic type in 53 lines. Several handpainted initials in red. Capital spaces elsewhere filled in red. Woodcut of the crucifixion on f3r. Woodcut T with snake on f3v. It is probably the first woodcut in a dated Tübingen incunabulum. Verso the t-igitur initial with winding serpent.

BINDING
Contemporary blind-panelled calf over wooden boards from an Augsburg workshop (Kyriss 86, plate 175, figs. 1-2,4 and 6). Centre panel of scrolling flowers enclosed by multiple rolls and fillets. Front cover with title tooled at head. Three frets. Clasps missing, rather worn, more especially on spine. Good condition with stronger usage traces. Spine with leather flaps. Joints broken. However, binding is still firm and stable. In the lids, stronger wormholes and wormings.
Folio: 28 x 20,5 x 8,5 cm.
Good condition. Clean and wide margins. Strong print on thick handmade paper. First five leaves with marginal lesions and slightly finger-stained. Scattered wormholes throughout, not heavy but affecting some letters in some quires, stronger worming on the first and last leaves. No cracks, tears, flaws or repairs.
