Grafton began her "Alphabet" novels in 1982 with A is for Alibi, intending to write a book using A through Z in the titles. Sickness struck, however. Her last was Y is for Yesterday in 2017 before her passing.

She toured to promote nearly every book. Grafton was gracious and willing to sign any and every book she wrote over 35 years.
