Matchbox toy cars

Lesney Products & Co. was created by Leslie Smith and Rodney Smith (no relation). The name "Lesney" is an acronym formed from the first three letters of Leslie and the last three letters of Rodney. In 1948, they started making toys in an old pub called "The Rifleman" on the boundary between Edmonton and Tottenham in North London. Matchbox diecast toy cars were the brain-child of an engineer, John Odell, who had joined the company early on. His daughter Annie kept bringing home spiders in a matchbox; so, he promised to make her a toy to fit in the matchbox if she would quit bringing spiders home. He scaled down the Lesney Road Roller the company produced and the Matchbox toy car we all know and love was born. Mattel continues the Matchbox tradition today. From fire trucks, ambulance, and police vehicles to American muscle cars, foreign imports, and JDM.

Some vehicles are current issue, but many are previous years that are no longer available on store shelves.

Matchbox cars are based on 1/64 scale or the size of a "match" box: close to Ho Model Railroad scale. Model builders and artists make customs from mild to wild. A mild custom may just be paint or custom real rider wheels added. A wild custom can get really crazy with opening doors, hoods, detailed motors, custom graphics and paint. For custom diorama in HO scale model railroading and HO scale slot car to add display pieces, rail cargo, garage shop, car dealership, car race spectator vehicles, emergency response, EMT, Ambulance, Fire and Police stations and more.

Interests cover the wide world of motor sports and history of automobiles: Indianapolis 500 Indy 500 Racing, Formula One, Dakar Rally racing, Grand Prix, Nascar, NHRA drag racing, Drift racing and Dirt Track. Collections can be very individualized. Some collect just a favorite car maker or model series. Some collect a particular type of racing like Baja Off-Road or customs like Lowriders. Super cars are well liked by many; be that as it may, you would be surprised at how many garbage truck and tow truck collections there are. And then some just love cars and want them all! Whatever your passion, die-cast vehicles make great displays in the entertainment room, man cave, shop, or basement.
