Topaz Gemstones

Topaz comes in many colours. Most gem quality topaz range from transparent to translucent. Topaz has a brilliant vitreous lustre.

Common Treatments

Heat treatment can change topaz colour. Many pink topaz are made by heat treating yellow or brown topaz. Irradiation of colourless topaz can create yellow and brown colours. The colour created by irradiation alone is liable to fade. But if heat treated a stable blue colour can be obtained. Topaz is also coated, often to produce green and optical effects.

Topaz Testing

Dichroscopes and Chelsea colour filters can be used to help identify topaz.
