Amtrak Transcontinental Steam Excursion 1977

edited by James B. Armstrong

The book features a unique look at railroad history, plenty of charm and insight, hard to find title, will look great in your collection.

In 1977, Amtrak sponsored a transcontinental trip using Southern Pacific's No 4449 which had been restored to pull the American Freedom Train in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial celebrations. The trip lasted from April 13-May 1, 1977 and ran from Birmingham, AL to 4449's home in Portland, OR. This book, issued at the time, describes the stations and towns along the route with exquisite topographical maps along the edge of each page. It also includes an essay, "Tracks Are Back: Amtrak at Six," describing the existing and proposed Amtrak passenger service (such as the Turboliner). Illustrated with black and white pages. 48 pages. Note: this is not the timetable for the excursion although it does include arrival and departure times.
