The author, Lucile Carden Reading in the early 60s became a member of the editorial board of the Children’s Friend. One of her first writing assignments was a series of retold true stories entitled “Shining Moments.” Lucile said the title occurred to her one Sunday in Church from the Hymn, “Improve the Shining Moments.”

The stories she wrote have been described as carefully drafted, yet simple in format. These vignettes shine forth gospel truth with a clear language that children can understand.

In all of these shining moments there is a pattern – an echo of Lucile’s own shining moment on that long-ago day when she opened her eyes and could see after a cornea transplant.

Shining Moments are times of courage, love, and selflessness in the lives of men, women, and children. You’ll read of a handicapped boy who finally experiences the thrill of skiing down Mount Du Lac. And of Heber J. Grant’s first meeting with Brigham Young – on the runners of Pres. Young’s sleigh. And of how a girl named Grace persuades Abraham Lincoln to grow his famous beard. And of prisoners of war who brought out the United States flag, which they had kept hidden from the guards, so they could sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

All of the stories are true accounts of individuals who, even for a moment, demonstrate courage, faith, or love; and each story is one that will shine long after it is read.
