Boiler Refractories:

Insulating block (Military Specification MIL-I-2819) which was a component of boiler walls and decks was composed of diatomaceous earth mixed with asbestos fiber.  Insulating block was used extensively in boiler engine construction aboard US Navy ships and vessels. Please see the diagrams that detail its usage.

Military Specifications are given for the various types of refractories used in boiler construction including:
High Temperature Insulating Brick, MIL-I-16008
Plastic Fireclay or Firebrick, MIL-P-15731
Plastic Chrome Ore, MIL-P-15384
Chrome Castable Refractory MIL-C-15413
High Temperature Refractory
Castable , MIL-C-717
Baffle Mix, MIL-C-15879
Air Setting Mortar,  MIL-M-15842
Firebrick (Grades A, B, & C
) MIL-B-15606

Note Insulating Block is the only material that explicitly states it contained asbestos, however, several other materials were known to be ACM such as firebrick and castable refractories.

Gaskets at the seating surface of the gooseneck and atomizer body were usually made of compressed asbestos or lead.
