Crewel-craft hand embroidery and needlework tapestry 
Needlework hand tapestry means needlework in wool silk cotton or metal thread carried out on an open mesh canvas with the lenght of the stitch ontrolled by the gauge or size of the mesh of the canvas, the entire surface covered by stitchery 
Crewel embroidery though thought of as exicuted in Jacobean designers was not solely confined to such pieces. Crewels were fine two ply wools were fine two-ply wools which were suitable for embroidery as apposed to single ply wool which was normally used for weaving cloth. Crewel embroidery is not controlled by the gauge of the canvas, but the shape and form of the detail being embroidered
