  The books cover is full burgundy leather with raised bands and gold gilt decorations to the spine. Label with gold gilt title writing to the spine. Gold gilt shield to front cover.  The front and back cover has some light surface shelf ware and with a small nick to the leather. Light rubbing to the corners and spine edges.  Also light rubbing to the top and bottom of the spine. With marble finish to the page block.  Also marble endpapers and inner boards. Small award labels to inner board and endpaper. The rear inner board housing an envelope for the coloured map. Map is complete and in good condition. With frontispiece and tissue guard.  The book is well illustrated throughout with plates and intext drawings ( see pictures). There are 597 pages including the index. The pages are in good clean condition throughout. the binding is tight and square. A nice clean copy of this rare and scarce book on New Light on Dark Africa 1891.
