Passion is in actuality Peter Gabriel’s soundtrack to the Martin Scorsese film The Last Temptation of Christ,
re-titled as a result of legal barriers; regardless of its name,
however, there’s no mistaking the records stirring power. Like much of
Gabriel’s solo work, the album is a product of his continuing
fascination with world music, which he employs here to create an
exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric tapestry of sound perfectly
evocative of the film’s resonant spiritual drama. Passion
achieves a cumulative effect clearly Middle Eastern in origin, yet its
brilliant fusion of ancient and modern music ultimately transcends both
geography and time. Remarkably dramatic, even visual, it is not only
Gabriel’s best film work but also deserving of serious consideration as
his finest music of any kind.
"I have put together two albums around the music of The Last Temptation
of Christ. This album is my work; the other, Passion Sources,
represents a selection of some of the traditional music, sources of
inspiration and location recordings. I was excited to be asked to work
on the music. When I first discussed the project with Martin Scorsese
in 1983 I wanted to find out how he was intending to film this
controversial novel. He wanted to present the struggle between the
humanity and the divinity of Christ in a powerful and original way, and I
was convinced by his commitment to the spiritual content and message.
He is an excellent and very musical director and working with him has
been a great experience.
After we finished mixing the film there were
some unfinished ideas that needed developing and I took some extra time
to complete this record. There are several pieces that were not able to
be included in the film and I felt that the record should be able to
stand as a separate body of work. I chose the working title for the film
- Passion.
We recorded some of the finest singers and soloists in
the field of world music and we set the score on a backdrop of
traditional North African rhythms and sounds. It was a wonderful
experience working with such different and idiosyncratic musicians. They
came from Pakistan, Turkey, India, Ivory Coast, Bahrain, Egypt, New
Guinea, Morocco, Senegal and Ghana. For many of them working with this
material was something quite new and they were very enthusiastic. The
soundtrack is full of the spirit of their performances." Peter Gabriel.

GRADING. Grading is
visual only unless otherwise stated. I go by Goldmine standards and try to be
conservative. I will play grade on certain items only - it is just impossible
for me to play grade everything I put on EBAY.
RECORD GRADING:
MINT
(M) ---- It should be SEALED and appear to be brand new. Mint means STILL SEALED, NEVER PLAYED.
NEAR MINT (NM or NM-) ---- OPENED or UNSEALED. Otherwise mint but has one or two tiny
inconsequential flaws that do not affect play. Covers should be close to
perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident.
VERY GOOD PLUS (VG++ or strong VG++ or VG+++) The record or cover
that all but the most particular collector would say looks outstanding.
Cover may have insignificant manufacturers defect such as notch hole or
cut corner.
VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+ or strong VG+) The record has been handled and
played infrequently or very carefully. On a disc, there may be light
paper scuffs from sliding in and out of a sleeve or the vinyl or some of
the original luster may be lost. A slight scratch that did not affect
play would be acceptable for most collectors. Cover has most of its
original gloss and has been well taken care of. Minor seam splits may
be acceptable.
VERY GOOD (VG or strong VG) ---- Record displays visible signs of
handling and playing, such as loss of vinyl luster, light surface
scratches, groove wear and spindle trails. Some audible surface noise,
non-feelable marks that might or will affect the sound as mild
occasional surface noise or periodic pops/clicks. Usually a cover is VG
when one or more of these problems are evident: ring wear, seam splits,
bent corners, loss of gloss, stains, etc.
VERY GOOD- (VG- or G+)
Record will show signs same as VG with heavier wear including noticeable
groove wear and feelable marks that will likely pop or click. Popping
or clicking will be most evident through quieter passages. Record
should play all the way through, but may skip.
GOOD (G) ---- Well
played with little luster and significant surface noise. Despite
defects, record should still play all the way through without skipping,
but may skip. Several cover flaws will be apparent, but should not
obliterate the artwork. Filler copy until a better one can be found.
POOR
(P) ---- Any record or cover that does not qualify for the above "Good"
grading should be seen as Poor. Only the rarest of records should ever
be graded as Poor while the others should go to the trash heap.
DISCLAIMER. Due to
the number of frivolous
returns which were
unwarranted, and due to the
nature of sound recorded products that can be easily
copied, there will no
