The 2006 World Cup in Germany was a smashing success for the host country and is one of the greatest iterations of the tournament ever. The young German side was not expected to compete seriously for the trophy, but they surpassed all expectations. Germany blew through the group stages with 9 points. Klose and Podoloski proved to be an incredible attacking combination. In the Round of 16, Germany handily defeated Sweden, before breaking Argentinian hearts and stopping Messi in the semifinals on penalties. Germany bowed out to eventual winners Italy in the last few minutes of stoppage time in the semifinals.

Not ready to go home empty-handed, Schweinsteiger scored two brilliant long-range strikes in the third-place match against Portugal, which won him the Man of the Match award. The 21-year-old nearly claimed a hat-trick but his deflected free kick was credited as an own-goal to Armando Petit.

Schweinsteiger played for the German national team from 2004 to 2016. He is Germany's fourth most-capped player of all time, having earned 121 caps and scored 24 goals. He was selected in their squads for four European Championships and three World Cups. He led the country to their famous 2014 World Cup victory.
