على الرغم من أن رواية "المزدَوَج" ليست من أعمال دوستويفسكي الأكثر شهرة، إلّا أنها تُعتبر الحجر الأساس في أسلوبه المتفرّد، حتى أن فلاديمير نابوكوف قال إنها "أعظم كتاب كتبه دوستويفسكي

الموضوع : تصوِّر لنا هذه الرواية الصراع الداخلي الذي يعتمل في نفس ياكوف بتروفيتش غوليادكين، موظف في إحدى إدارات مدينة بطرسبورغ انقلبت حياته رأساً على عقب عند ظهور شخص يشبهه تماماً، ويكيد له ويحتل شيئاً فشيئاً مكانته في العمل والمنزل، إلى أن يدفع بحياته إلى الانهيار التام. ولعلّ أهم ما أثّر في السيد غوليادكين وأثار دهشته أن الناس من حوله، وعلى رأسهم رئيسه في العمل وخادمه بتروشكا، لم يبدُ عليهم أنهم صُدموا بظهور هذا الشبيه، واعتبروه مجرد رجل يشبهه وعاملوه على هذا الأساس

إن اعتماد دوستويفسكي على تقنية الحوار الداخلي بشكلٍ مكثّف في هذه الرواية مكّنه من أن يسبر أغوار شخصية بطله، وأن يتغلغل في نفسيته التي غيّرها دخول هذا الآخر، مكرّساً بذلك عبقريته في تحليل النفس الإنسانية، حيث قال عنه نيتشه: "دوستويفسكي هو الكاتب الوحيد الذي تعلمتُ منه شيئاً من علم النفس

Subject : This novel depicts for us the internal conflict that rages in the soul of Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin, an employee in one of the departments of Petersburg whose life is turned upside down when a person who looks exactly like him appears, intrigues him and gradually occupies his position at work and at home, until he pushes his life to a complete collapse. Perhaps the most important thing that affected and surprised Mr. Golyadkin was that the people around him, headed by his boss and his servant Petruchka, did not seem to them to be shocked by the appearance of this double, and considered him just a man who looked like him and treated him on this basis.

Dostoyevsky's reliance on the technique of internal dialogue extensively in this novel enabled him to probe the mysteries of his hero’s personality, and to penetrate into his psyche, which was changed by the entry of this other, thereby establishing his genius in analyzing the human soul.
