Strong conceptual album with much power, energy and dynamics

A strong band performance is delivered by Arena in their 20th anniversary year with this work from 2015 that is much more powerful than the preceding album. It offers much power, energy and dynamics: besides some softer parts the music is mostly loaden with energy, partly with much drive and sometimes also heavy, up to some bombastic sound passages. In several songs classic elements of the Arena sound of earlier years have been incorporated.

Especially to point out is the excellent guitar playing of John Michell with several magnificent guitar solos, the versed performance of Clive Nolan as composer and keyboarder and of Paul Manzi on vocals plus the strong drum work by Mick Pointer. New band member on bass is Kylan Amos who already performed with Caamora and on Clive Nolan’s “Alchemy“ and who contributed the photos and artwork of the booklet.      

According to Clive Nolan the conceptual album is based on the horror story by M.R. James titled “Casting the Runes” and the film version “Night of the Demon“ from 1957.

This recommendable CD was recorded in the trusted sound quality at the Thin Ice Studios and John Mitchell’s Outhouse Studio, in cooperation with Simon Hanhart as producer. You can listen to all tracks of this album on YouTube.

Eine starke Bandleistung liefern Arena in ihrem 20. Jubiläumsjahr mit diesem Werk von 2015 ab, das wesentlich druckvoller ausfällt als das vorangegangene Album. Es bietet viel Power, Energie und Dynamik: neben einigen ruhigeren Teilen ist die Musik meist energiegeladen, teilweise sehr fetzig und manchmal auch heavy, bis hin zu einigen bombastischen Soundpassagen. In mehrere Songs sind klassische Elemente des Arena-Sounds früherer Jahre eingeflossen.

Hervorzuheben sind die exzellente Gitarrenarbeit von John Michell mit mehreren tollen Gitarrensoli, die gelungene Leistung von Clive Nolan als Komponist und Keyboarder und von Paul Manzi als Sänger sowie die starke Schlagzeugarbeit von Mick Pointer. Neu in der Band am Bass ist Kylan Amos, der schon bei Caamora und Clive Nolan’s “Alchemy“ mitgewirkt und Fotos und Artwork für das Booklet erstellt hat.       

Laut Clive Nolan basiert das Konzeptalbum auf der Horrorgeschichte von  M.R. James mit dem Titel “Casting the Runes” und der Filmversion “Night of the Demon“ von 1957.

Diese empfehlenswerte CD wurde in der bewährten Soundqualität in den Thin Ice Studios und im Outhouse Studio von John Mitchell aufgenommen, mit Beteiligung von Simon Hanhart als Produzent. Auf YouTube gibt es alle Tracks dieses Albums zum Anhören.
