For your consideration, you are viewing an Antique piece of WWI Military History, this was a German Ersatz Knife Bayonet ("Ersatz" translates to "substitute" in English) this has been modified as a knife, and it has had its locking button removed and filled, the mortise slot has also been filled so it can no longer be fitted to Mauser Gewehr 98 rifle. This does not have its original scabbard but it has been paired with a brand new hand-stitched thick cowhide black leather sheath belt hanger, (Hand made in Queensland Australia) this sheath measures 36.5 cm / 14.37" and on its own, it is valued at $70. The leather is super strong and supple with all the stitching tight and intact, the snap button is tight, and overall is of excellent quality.
The Ersatz bayonets, were for many years said to be the last-ditch bayonets made by the Germans at the end of WWI in order to reduce production costs and time. However, it is now however accepted that the opposite was the case and the bayonets were actually manufactured during the early years of WWI, in Germany. At the beginning of the Great War, there were not enough regulation bayonets to equip the existing and rapidly expanding German army. The Ersatz Bayonets were manufactured by local smiths in their workshops, the final result was hundreds of variations. In addition to newly-constructed bayonets, Ersatz Bayonets were also created by modifying captured bayonets of other countries.
No manufacturers are attributed to most of the bayonets and it is thought that many were assembled from parts from a large number of factories making parts. Hilts varied considerably in style as did the method of manufacture, from formed to cast. The materials consisted of brass, sheet metal, and cast sheet. The Blades also vary in position and style of fullers and some had no fullers. The German specification was for a 12-inch blade. German-made ersatz bayonet blades typically have a single Fraktur inspection marking on the ricasso or blade spine. As the war went on, these ersatz substitute bayonets were replaced by the proper regulation army bayonets. Many of these ersatz bayonets were then sent to the Turkish forces. This example has been modified for Turkey as noted by the high muzzle ring. The Turks shortened their blades to 10-inches and shortened examples of 10 inches and under are automatically presumed to have been 'Turked'.
This has a one-piece pressed hilt folded over the tang and pommel block; squared pommel beak, and crosspiece with 15mm. muzzle ring, the blade has no fullers with a spear point tip, Turk shortened.

CONDITION: This knife is Antique, used, and in good condition for its age and use in warfare. This was originally a bayonet but it has been modified to be used as knife, and it has had its locking button removed and filled, the mortise slot has also been filled so it can no longer be fitted to a rifle. It is very sturdy and strong. The metal grips fit tightly to the tang, the blade has a polished finish with an aged patina, some scattered stain spots, scuff and faint pitting. The edge is not sharp and has several fleabite dings. The remaining metal on the cross-guards, handle and pommel has a polished finish with an aged patina with multiple scuffs and indents and marks. The black leather sheath is new, hand-stitched, and made in Australia, the leather is strong and supple with all the stitching tight and intact. # Please note that the photographs form part of the description; Super-sized photos are available for you to view in the eBay gallery, to show up the finer details and condition.

FRAGILE MAIL: If you require a Fragile Service, you will need to find a courier company that offers this service. Australia Post Extra Cover Insurance will cover you for loss only. Australia Post does not offer a fragile service so items cannot be covered for damage in transit. I always add lots of extra weight to the postage cost to make sure your item is well packed making its journey to you intact. I use heavy-duty bubble wrap, newspaper and recycled boxes. |
