For your consideration, you are viewing a rare 1930s Vintage Electroplated Copper Cast Spelter Sculpture Statue of a classic Native American Indian Chief sitting on a log smoking his peace pipe, he is wearing his full headdress and he is wrapped in a blanket that has an eagle design on the back. This was originally a US souvenir as it has a little plaque sitting on the log which reads "Chicago Illinois" It has also been signed on the back which I can't work out exactly but I think reads "?DOUGE USA"
Spelter was used to make mostly small and sometimes large sculptures (due to the fragile nature of spelter), clocks, candlesticks, vases or planters in the late 19th and the early 20th century and up until the 1930s pre-WWII. After the war, most of the souvenirs were from Japan and made of Anodised Aluminum.
#SPELTER: A crude smelted Zinc, an alloy in which zinc is the main constituent. China and East India first began to produce spelter from zinc in the mid-17th century when it was known as ‘Tutanego’. Dutch traders requisitioned a Portuguese trading ship loaded with zinc from the Orient. It was sold under the name of ‘Spiauter’, and ‘Spialter’, in later years in Europe, the name changed to 'Speltrum' and is known today as ‘Spelter’. Demand for spelter continued to grow during the mid-nineteenth century. The zinc and lead spelter are lighter and more fragile than bronze, but this material can be successfully covered with copper by electroplating and then by gilding to achieve different patinas, seeming to be a real bronze sculpture. In 1910, faced with this confusion, the bronze makers obtained a court ruling which legally obligated the spelter manufacturers of zinc sculpture to mention that their casting was in fact a "Bronze Imitation" instead of "Bronze Art" as they were marketed as at the time. But by the 1920s the production of spelter significantly increased due to the shortage of copper (needed for bronze and brass) due to the high demand for copper needed to manufacture military munitions during WWI. Making spelter the decorative material of choice back in the day. Spelter was used to make sculptures, clocks, candlesticks, vases or planters in the late 19th and the early 20th century and up until the 1930s.
