This is a very attractive and well-made art glass paperweight which appears to me to be modelled on a raspberry ripple soft serve ice cream and is made by Caithness Glass - a highly respected Scottish hot glass company.

I would describe it as a good quality, egg-shaped paperweight with a twisted inner core of clear glass covered in white and raspberry coloured pigments, which is then encased in a clear, pale blue glass. For all the world this looks like a raspberry ripple soft serve ice cream! I am pretty confident that was the artist’s intent.

The egg shape is very well done. The pale blue casing is an excellent accompaniment to the white and raspberry core. The egg is quite tall, has a pointy apex, is about 11 cm in height, about 7 cm in maximum diameter and is quite heavy. I’ve only found one similar (in a different colourway) and so I am pretty sure that this is an early and very collectable piece, perhaps from the 1980s or 1990s.

The base is very nicely polished and has an engraved mark: “CIIG”. Caithness Glass was established in Scotland in 1961 and has been making paperweights since 1969. The CIIG mark is a recognised Caithness mark, used for lesser items sold through its on-premises shop. This lovely paperweight is in very good condition, with no chips and just a very minor surface graze near the top, which is shown in the last two photos.
