You are viewing a piece of Russian Military History. This is a Standard Imperial Russian Socket M1891/30 Bayonet with its characteristic quadriform blade with its point shaped like a flat screwdriver. It can be used as a disassembly screwdriver tool when removed from the gun. These socket bayonets are for use with 7.62 mm. The M1891 Mosin-Nagant rifle is a five-shot, bolt-action, internal magazine-fed rifle. These are known in Russia as 'Vintovka Mosina' (Mosin Rifle), or 'Trechlineynaja vintovka' (three-line rifle) after their .30 calibre bore.

Late in the 19th century, Russia’s army grew increasingly frustrated with its arsenal of obsolete rifles. The standard-issue rifle was the Berdan II, a single-shot rifle that fired bottle-neck black powder cartridge which drastically limited the firepower of Russian infantrymen, as they needed to load a fresh cartridge after every single shot with the exceptionally large 51" (4 foot 3 inches) 9.3 pounds Berdan Rifle. Eventually, the M1891 rifle was developed by combining ideas from Russian Army captain "S. I. Mosin" and Belgian designer "Nagant". This rifle was officially adopted for service by the Russian Tsar in 1891 for the Tzar’s armies, replacing the inefficient Berdan II, the Mosin Nagant infantry rifle ended up becoming the standard issue weapon of the new Soviet Union.

The M1891 rifle was originally issued in three versions: the Infantry rifle, the Dragoon rifle, and the Cossack rifle. The Cossack rifle wasn’t equipped with a bayonet. First rifles were produced in the Chaterellaut Arms factory in France and full-scale production began later at Izhevsk and Tula.

The USSR production of this rifle continued until 1948 or so when the machinery was sold to Poland. The "Mosin Nagant" was one of the most widely used weapons of the 20th century. The Mosin was an unassuming but accurate and very reliable weapon and served well into the 21st century, one of the very few weapons that saw continuous service over the span of three centuries.

The M1891 rifle and bayonet were the Russian mainstays during the First World War and the Revolution of 1917. Although the M1891/30 had superseded the M1891 by the time Russia entered the Second World War, however, due to a shortage of weaponry, the M1891 was widely used during the Second World War as well. The M1891/30 bayonet has a press stud to secure the bayonet in place, rather than the locking ring of the M1891.

The M91/30 Mosin Nagant rifle was the standard rifle of the Russian and Red Army but it was also adopted and used by Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Czechoslovakia, DDR, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Korea, Montenegro, North Vietnam, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Turkey, USA, Yugoslavia. Russia did not supply a scabbard with these particular bayonets, Soviet military doctrine called for the bayonet to remain fixed to the rifle at all times with the exception of travelling by motor vehicle or when in long-term storage. However, Finland, Germany, and Austria manufactured scabbards for use with bayonets that they captured from the Russians. There are scabbards for M. 1891 made by Russians before WWI with brown leather for the Infantry. The Dragoons had bayonets fastened to the scabbard of a sword.

CONDITION: This socket bayonet is Vintage 30s to the 40s, used and in good condition for its age and use in warfare. This does not have a sheath or scabbard. The release button is in working order. The blade has a dark-blued finish with no stain or pitting. The screwdriver tip is not worn and is sharp. The quad edges are not sharp and show light wear on the edges, and they have no dings. The remaining metal on the shoulder and the muzzle are factory rough with a lightly worn dark blued finish with a little scuff and normal marks. # Please note: The Photographs form part of the description; Super-sized photos can show up the finer details and conditions.
