David Quigley captured this fresh plein air oil sketch on at Monhegan Island in Maine at Pulpit Rock, located at the Southeastern side of the island.

This painting is one of 74 painted studies that he made over the summer, 29 of them painted en plea air off the beaten path on Mohegan Island.

nHis painting depicts the rich colors of the iron coast and greenish gray granite that is so uniquely characteristic to this out-to-sea island.

This huge rock is in the shape of a church pulpit that stands solidly against the deep blue October waters. The day this was painted you could see the mainland and surrounding islands clearly ten mile away in every direction. The waters sparkled with eye-achingly bright light as the shadows stretch longer over the great monolithic headlands and distinct angles of the rocks. The white surf swirled around the base of the Pulpit and on this day as four seals playfully swam along its currents, pausing momentarily to pop up and check out the painter.

The artist painted at high tide and in a very difficult location to hike to for this vantage point. It involved level one hiking with some portaging of art supplies to reach up through 6 to 7 foot ledges to get to a rock shelf that was completely shaded from the sun and viewers.

He took a calculated risk to get close enough to capture the drama of this seascape and bring you this stunning view.

This is a richly colored seascape depicting one of Maine's most forlorn out-to-sea places, no wonder it's an island filled with atmosphere and unique art history.
