OBJECT Sculpture of Heracles fighting the Nemean Lion
ORIGIN Netherlands, c. 1680
MATERIAL Perlmutt
DESCRIPTION Filigree mother-of-pearl sculpture depicting Heracles fighting the lion of Nemea. on a black wooden base.
Heracles, who had fallen out of favour with the goddess Hera, was, according to legend, condemned to, to serve King Eurystheus for 12 years, who gave him 12 tasks.
Heracles was to bring him the skin of the lion Nemea as the first of the 12 tasks to be performed. The lion was considered invulnerable. When the beast leapt at him, Heracles struck it across the skull with his huge club, so that the lion fled into a crevice in the rock, which divided Mount Tretos.
After Heracles had closed one exit of the crevice, he grabbed the lion, when he came out the other end and strangled him to death. He killed the lion with the lion's own claws. He killed the lion with its own claws, for only these were capable of cutting the animal's skin. He took the skin over his arm and made his way back to King Eurystheus. Later, he tailored a cloak for himself from the fur, which made him almost invulnerable. When Eurystheus saw him coming with the fur, he was so frightened by its power, that he hid in a pot and refused to receive Heracles. Later, too, the king dared not let him come forward, but had a certain Copreus give him his orders outside the city walls. The lion was later named by Hera as the constellation of Leo in the sky.
