Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) was one of the most prolific and talented commercial photographers of his time. It is estimated that he made over 10,000 portraits of the crème-de-le-crème of the entertainment, social, political and sports world. His series of photographs of Frida Kahlo are a milestone in the art of extended portraiture. He was the anchor photographer for Conde Nast as well as a contributor to many other publications. He was an early pioneer in the use of color photography. An interesting aside, Muray was a champion fencer with a lifelong passion for the sport, ultimately collapsing while fencing in 1965 which ended his life. George Eastman House holds a large selection of his early color work as well as many of his black & white portraits and his lesser known landscapes.
