Программа «Союз - Аполлон» стала первым совместным космическими проектом СССР и США. До этого космос был для обеих держав полем наиболее острой политической, научно-технической и психологической конкуренции. В странах принципиально различались концепции и технологии его освоения. Совместный полет стал знаковым не только в космической сфере, но и в налаживании диалога правительств. Его вскоре назвали «рукопожатием в космосе», потому что на земле политики, представлявшие разные социально-экономические системы, не могли себе позволить взяться за руки.
Идея родилась в 1967 г. у американцев и потребовала восьми лет на свое осуществление. Полету предшествовали переговоры НАСА и Академии наук, подписание соглашений руководителями государств, совместная разработка технологий и методов стыковки, создание соответствующего оборудования. Программа была утверждена в мае 1972 г. Соглашением между СССР и США о сотрудничестве в исследовании и использовании космического пространства в мирных целях.
The Soyuz-Apollo programme was the first joint space project between the USSR and the USA. Before then, space had been a field of the most intense political, scientific, technical and psychological competition for both powers. The countries had fundamentally different concepts and technologies for its development. The joint flight was a landmark not only in the space field, but also in the dialogue between the governments. It was soon dubbed the "handshake in space", because on earth politicians from different socio-economic systems could not afford to hold hands.
The idea was born in 1967 in the United States and took eight years to materialise. The flight was preceded by negotiations between NASA and the Academy of Sciences, the signing of agreements by heads of state, the joint development of docking technologies and methods, and the creation of appropriate equipment. The program was approved in May 1972 by an agreement between the USSR and the United States on cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes.
