Howdy!
Here is an auction for one (1)
Medal honoring the 445th anniversary of the founding of San Germán, 2nd oldest city in PP, and well regarded by tourists for its romanticism derived from its architecture, picturesque streets, and excellent food, cozy museums, but above all, for its World Heritage famous church of Porta Coeli, one of the oldest in all of the Western Hemisphere, and of course, oldest continually operating church building in the U.S., presently a museum of really old religious artifacts since 1949.
CHARACTERISTICS:
The objective was to create a piece with an old colonial flavor to it, to go hand in hand with its location, so Antique Bronze was chosen. Its OBVERSE shows a view Porta Coeli as if from across the street, highlighting its impressive high in the mound temple look, just like a miniature Greek Parthenon. It reads " Porta Coeli Church, Museum of Religious Art, Historical Heritage 1606 "
DATA SPECIFICS:
This piece measures 40mm x 3mm, (a bit larger than a Morgan Silver Dollar) has a weight of 30 grams, and has reeded edge, like a quarter dollar. It is made of bronze with antique finish, is in Uncirculated condition, and comes in its protective plastic capsule, to save it from scratches. There is a total mintage of a mere 100 pieces, with each individually numbered.

HISTORY OF PORTA COELI CHURCH:

Porta Coeli ("Gateway to Heaven") Convent church and school, or El Convento de Santo Domingo de Porta Coeli in Spanish, is one of the oldest church structures in the Western Hemisphere and oldest church under United States jurisdiction, located in San Germán, Puerto Rico

Although the town of San German was initially established on September 18, 1531, it had to be relocated several times until being finally placed in its present location. In its beginning, Empress Isabella of Spain had issued a decree whereby 200 Gold ducats be given to help build a monastery to the Dominican order. The original building was ruined by the attack of the French and Caribs, by 1544 only a dwelling of boards and 2 friars were left.

In 1606 the Dominican Order was finally given license to build the Convento de Porta Coeli at the crest of a hill in what is now San Germán Historic District, its structure finished and occupied in 1609. During the 18th century the Convento was reconstructed and a church built next to it. The single nave church was constructed of rubble masonry with stucco surfaced walls and a wood truss roof.

In 1949, Monsignor McManus, the bishop of Ponce transferred the property to the Department of Public Works and the restoration was completed by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, work was finalized by 1960 and was turned into a religious museum with religious art from XVI to the XIX centuries.  The style of Porta Coeli is northern Spanish Romanesque with rubble masonry and stucco surfaced walls and a beautiful wood truss roof.

For many years the church was painted a bright orange, recently the stucco walls were repainted to white, it’s original color.

In 1949 Ubaldino Ramírez de Arellano, and Monsignor Mac Manus, Bishop of Ponce, Senator Santiago R. Palmer and others arranged for the transfer of the property to the Department of Public Works and the restoration was completed by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. the church of Porta Coeli was sold to the Government of Puerto Rico for a dollar so that it would be responsible for its safekeeping and preservation, which was finalized by 1960.

The church now houses the Museo de Arte Religioso. This is a museum of religious paintings and wooden carvings of santos (saints) dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, paintings, sculptures, and images with history excerpts.  Among the sculptures are: 17th century St. Nicholas de Bari, 17th century Saint Tomas de Aquino, 19th century Señora de la Monserrate Black Madonna and Child. Other museum pieces include choral books, primitive carvings and more.

The building was listed in 1976 on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places as "Convento de Porta Coeli".

There is also a Porta Coeli cemetery in Puerto Rico. Located in Bayamon, it is the resting grounds, among others, of Luis Aguad Jorge, a Cuban actor who became famous in Puerto Rico as the enanito de Holsum, or Holsum (bread)'s dwarf.
