SALUDOS,
Esta subasta es por una (1) medalla tamaño un poquito más grande que un peso gordo de plata 40mm (1.5") y sobre 1 onza de peso, en Bronce laminado en Niquel con terminado "antique" y esmalte a color en su reverso, conmemorando los 500 años de la fundación de San Juan, ciudad capital de Puerto Rico. La medalla viene en dura cápsula de acrílico para su preservación. Tirada inicial de sólo 100 ejemplares enumerados. La medalla es en borde ranurado, como la peseta. Esta medalla tambien viene en version jumbo 60mm que vendo por separado, exactamente el mismo diseño, excepto mas grande y con los bordes mas elegantes en anverso y reverso.
Su anverso, el cual celebra la excelente conservación su añejo casco histórico, declarado monumento de la humanidad por la organización de las Naciones Unidas, a través de la UNESCO, lleva la figura central de Juan Ponce de León, su fundador, sobre una cruz latina, recordando las cruces en las velas de las 3 carabelas, que divide el diseño anverso de la medalla en 4 partes. Las esquinas izquierda y derecha de la cruz terminan en trángulos con estrellas, simulando la bandera de Puerto Rico. El Cordero Pascual descanza sobre la base de la cruz, cuya parte superior es coronada por el Sol Taíno de Yukiyú (Dios), el cual brilla efervecente sobre el resto de los elementos a relieve.
Las 4 partes estan ocupadas por La Fortaleza (o Palacio de Santa Catalina), sede del gobierno; Iglesia de San José, la 2da más antigua del continente Americano, sede del Cristianismo; El Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, el cual por cientos de años ocupó la sede militar y defensiva de la ciudad; y la Capilla Del Cristo, cuya calle y parque aledaños antiguamente fueron el centro de las fiestas del pueblo, y la cual fué erigida en acción de gracias al divino milagro allí presenciado ante cientos de Sanjuaneros.
Todo el arte se halla rodeado por la frase que lee "500 AÑOS DE LA FUNDACION DE SAN JUAN, CAPITAL DE PUERTO RICO * 1521 - 2021 *. Una garita adorna a la derecha del Morro, mientras que el número de serie de cada pieza aparece a la izquierda de la Capila Del Cristo.
El reverso está dedicado a homenajear la histórica riqueza del capital humano de la capital Boricua, presenando 4 Sanjuaneros clave, cuyas efigies rodean una imagen de las esculturas sobre la gran fuente principal del Paseo de la Princesa, que consta de bellas mujeres, hombres, y niños, de todas las razas y en frenético movimiento, quienes se alzan como si estuvieran danzando al son Africano de Bomba y Plena, en cuyo centro surje un caballo esbocao a todo galope, resaltando lo imparables que somos, esculturas que resumen la aportación social, racial, y cultural del ser Puertorriqueño. Debajo de esta imagen aparece escudo de la "Muy Noble y Muy Leal Ciudad de San Juan" (frase otorgada por la realeza española honrando la valentía de los vecinos contra ataques extranjeros) Rodeando el escudo Sanjuadino, se lee: "CELEBRACION DE LA HISTORIA". Coronando la parte superior de la medalla aparece la bandera de Puerto Rico, a la derecha del Maestro Rafael aparece una garita, y bajo el maestro aparece el logo "San Juan 500".
Los 4 Sanjuaneros claves son:
Ramón Power y Giralt (1775 - 1813), joven político puertorriqueñista de ferviente religiosidad, Capitán de navío en la Armada Española, quien fuese electo diputado a cortes por Puerto Rico, siendo nuestro 1er comisionado residente, y eventualmente fué electo Vicepresidente del Parlamento Español durante las famosas Cortes de Cádiz, siendo capaz de usar su puesto político para asegurase la aprobación de muchísimas leyes ventajosas para la isla, la cual resultó en un progreso sin precedente hasta entonces en la historia económica y social de Puerto Rico. Está enterrado con honores en la Catedral de San Juan;
El "Maestro de maestros", Rafael Cordero y Molina (1790 - 1868), Negro liberto hijo de esclavos, quien aprendió a leer y escribir por cuenta propia desde chico, llegando a ser un talentoso prodigio, que supo ganarse la confianza y el cariño del vecindario, eventualmente convirtiéndose en maestro, cuya cátedra, la cual impartía gratuitamente a ricos y pobres de todos colores, le llevó a ser reconocido por Su Majestad, el Rey de España, quien le confirió un buen salario fijo de por vida. Es conocido como "El padre de la Educación Pública Puertorriqueña", su escuela es preservada y el mayor premio que reciben los maestros en Puerto Rico lleva su nombre;
Doña Fela, Felisa Rincón De Gauthier (1897-1994), imponente líder Feminista y señora de gran elegancia y encantadores modales, quien de ser ayudante de farmacia y costurera, llegó a ser modista, dueña de boutique, y eventualmente dueña de su propia fábrica de ropa, de las primeras mujeres dueña de empresas en la isla. Gran luchadora de justicia social, se convirtió en 1947 en "1ra Alcaldeza de una Ciudad Capital del continente americano", quien no sólo trajo Nieve de Nueva York a Puerto Rico para los niños pobres, sino que impulsó grandes proyectos sociales, transformando la apestosa y oscura ciudad de arrabales del 1947 hasta convertirla en la metrópolis de calles anchas, bellos parques, modernos y lujosos edificios, excelente iluminación y buena transportación, al final de su mandato en 1969, dejando una ciudad digna de ser nuestra capital. Doña Fela influyó grandemente a que muchas mujeres impulsaran sus carreras políticas, gerenciales y de autoempresas;
Y por último, Don Ricardo Alegría (1921 - 2011), educador, antropólogo social, y el "Padre de la Arqueología Moderna en Puerto Rico", quien literalmente dedicó su vida entera en escudriñar, estudiar y desarrollar políticas de reconstrucción y preservación histórica en San Juan, y subsiguientemente por todo Puerto Rico, fué fundador del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, y emprendió grandes avances culturales que le ganaron fama mundial como perito en el tema de la conservación adecuada de la arquitectura y tantas otras artes relacionadas. Hablar de Ricardo Alegría no se puede sin mencionar San Juan, su bebé. En el 2021 tambien se cumple el centenario de Ricardo Alegría y a él dedicamos esta pieza.

The name might say "old," but this is where history
meets modern-day. San Juan is celebrating five centuries of vibrant culture and
countless stories, so get your party hat on and join the fiesta!
The so-called walled city has been enchanting its visitors for
centuries with impressive fortifications, towering walls, open plazas, and
hidden patios, and cobblestone streets that are just the ticket for you to
travel in time. Built by the Spaniards, this historical gem is the oldest city
in the United States and its territories. Yet, it still holds the magic and
charm of yesteryear – attracting visitors worldwide.
Structure and objects, monuments, and landmarks hold traces of
the past frozen in time. Still, the city never looked so passionate, bold, and
enticing! Old San Juan has five
centuries of history and is ready to be revealed one building or plaza at a
time.
A walled city is born ...Pop quiz time!
Did you know that San Juan and Puerto Rico’s names switched? The
islet was first called Puerto Rico, and San Juan Bautista was the name given by
the Spanish conquistador Christopher Columbus to the entire Island in 1493.
Before his arrival, the native Taínos called their home Borikén.
Years after the rediscovery of Puerto Rico, in 1508, Juan Ponce
de León arrived on the Island. You may know him for his continued search for
the fountain of youth, but he became the first Spanish governor of the heart
and soul of the Caribbean. In 1514, he founded Villa Caparra. Eventually, the
inhabitants insisted on moving the town to the islet, complaining that the settlement
was too far from the dock where the ships from Spain arrived. The ruins of that
settlement remain today around seven miles from the islet.
Historical documents captured the concerns regarding the
dangerousness of traveling between the town and the port, the lack of adequate
ventilation, and the poor health conditions of the residents of Caparra.
However, Ponce de León insisted on staying for reasons related to agriculture.
That door, the only remaining entrance from the colonial era,
was the main gate of kings and dignitaries into what became la ciudad
amurallada or “the walled city.” The door leads to El Paseo de la Princesa (the
Princess Promenade), a pedestrian pathway just outside the walls. You can find
artisans and street vendors gathering there during the weekends to greet people
visiting the National Historic Site.
Fun Facts for History Buffs
Calle del Cristo is the oldest street in Old San Juan and has
the largest number of religious buildings.
El Morro was built in 1539 to defend the city from attacks by
sea. It has six floors and is higher than the Castillo San Cristóbal, built to
prevent attacks by land. The white and red flag that flies over El Morro is a
Spanish military flag known as the "Cruz de Borgoña."
The Casa Blanca Museum is the oldest sample of Spanish
architecture in the United States and Puerto Rico. The structure has 14 rooms
and original furniture from the 16th and 17th centuries.
In the 16th century, Hotel El Convento was a religious school
that later became Puerto Rico's first convent in the 17th century with
Carmelite nuns.
The oldest spiral staircase in Puerto Rico and America built in
mortar in the 16th century is at the back of the San Juan Bautista Cathedral.
It has 88 steps and leads to the church bell tower. Access is not open to the
public.
The architecture of Old San Juan was made "in grids"
and allowed cross-ventilation between its buildings and squares. When you walk
through the streets, always look for shade!
The material used to build structures in the 16th century,
including forts, is called mortar and consists of limestone, sea sand, and
brick.
16th-century houses were single-story, had one or two doors, and
had inner gardens. The second floors and balconies were built from the 17th
century onwards.
Puerto Rico has one of the highest vaccination rates in the
United States and its territories. As of September 14th, 2021, 84.6%
of eligible residents have at least one dose and 74% are fully vaccinated. As
the Island continues to encourage travelers to follow local safety measures, it
is recommended that visitors check "Travel Guidelines" on Discover
Puerto Rico's website for the most updated entry requirements and protocols in
place.
