YOU ARE PURCHASING 10 PAIR OF REPRODUCTION H.O. SCALE SLOT CAR CHASSIS BRUSHES.  PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR INFORMATION AND SPECIFICATIONS ON USAGE AND COPPER GRAPHITE CONTENT.

These new brushes are made in the USA from a combination of copper and graphite.  The brushes are flat on both top and bottom and can therefore be used in all Aurora Thunderjet, AFX, and Magna-Traction chassis, as well as all Dash, Johnny Lightning and Auto World chassis.  The dimensions of these brushes closely match the original Aurora Thunderjet brushes.

Aurora made three different brushes for use with their pancake chassis as described below.  Only the original Thunderjet brush will work on all variations of the pancake chassis.

Original Thunderjet brush:

The original Thunderjet brush was flat on the top and bottom.

Tuff Ones and AFX brush:

This second generation brush had a domed top and a "V" cut on the bottom.  It was designed to fit over the "V" groove in the chassis brush arm.  From top to bottom, this brush is taller than the original Thunderjet brush.  However, when properly seated onto the brush arm, the resulting height should be equal to the original Thunderjet brush.  This brush should not be used on a Magna-Traction or X-Traction chassis.

Magna-Traction brush:

This third generation brush was designed to be used with a spring between the brush and the chassis brush arm.  The brush looks like the original Thunderjet brush with only a small bump added on the bottom, apparently added to help the brush center itself on the spring.  These brushes should not be used on any other chassis.  The height of the Magna-Traction brush, minus the bump, is the same as the Thunderjet brush.

General Brush Information:

The most important component of a brush is the material.  All brushes are a combination of copper (or silver) and graphite.  Four combinations of copper and graphite were used to create these brushes: (copper/graphite) 85%/15%, 80%/20%, 75%/25% and 70%/30%.   All brushes were produced from the same mold so there are no dimensional differences.

A higher copper content increases both the conductivity of the brush and the hardness, but may be more abrasive on the commutator.  A higher graphite content will make the brush softer and provide additional lubrication, but may lose a bit of conductivity due to the lower copper content.  The right brush for any given chassis and application will need to be determined by testing, setup and personal preference.

These brushes will work for all Aurora Thunderjet, AFX and Magna-Traction chassis.  They will also work in all variations of the Dash, Johnny Lightning and Auto World chassis.  However, because the stock brushes used in chassis other than Aurora may be a bit taller than the stock Aurora brush, you may need to adjust the spring tension on the Thunderjet style chassis to compensate when replacing the original brushes.  Since Magna-Traction and X-Traction chassis use a brush spring, the slightly shorter Aurora stock brush should work as well or better in these chassis than a taller brush.
