Die achte Ausgabe der Serie Australien bei Nacht ist dem Flughund gewidmet. Die Münze mit Black Proof Veredelung wurde aus einer Unze 99,9% Silber geprägt und ist auf nur 1.000 Exemplare weltweit limitiert. Das Motiv zeigt einen Flughund, der kopfüber an einem Ast hängt. Im Hintergrund sind zwei weitere Flughunde in der gleichen Haltung zu sehen, während ein weiteres Individuum im Flug vor dem Vollmond abgebildet ist. Ebenfalls im Design enthalten ist die Aufschrift "AUSTRALIA AT NIGHT - FLYING FOX". Die Rückseite zeigt das offizielle Wappen von Niue sowie die Aufschriften "ONE DOLLAR", "1OZ 999 SILVER" und "2023".

Flughunde sind eng mit Fledermäusen verwandt und unterscheiden sich von ihren Artgenossen nur durch die Form der Schnauze und der Augen sowie die Tatsache, dass sie im Gegensatz zu Fledermäusen keinen Gebrauch von Ultraschall machen, um sich zu orientieren. Weltweit sind etwa 200 Flughundarten bekannt, welche in Afrika, Asien, Australien und Ozeanien beheimatet sind. Dort sind sie ein wichtiger Bestandteill des Ökosystems, da sie sich von Nektar und Pollen ernähren und die Pollen in ihrem Fell über große Entfernungen transportieren können. Flughunde haben somit eine ähnliche Funktion wie Bienen und tragen zu dem Wachstum der Urwälder bei. The eighth issue of the Australia at Night Series is dedicated to the Flying Fox. The coin with Black Proof finish was struck from one ounce of 99.9% silver and is limited to only 1,000 pieces worldwide. The motive depicts a flying fox hanging upside down from a branch. In the background two more flying foxes are shown in the same posture, while another individual is depicted in flight in front of the full moon. The design also includes the inscription "AUSTRALIA AT NIGHT - FLYING FOX". The reverse features the official Niue coat of arms and the inscriptions "ONE DOLLAR", "1OZ 999 SILVER" and "2023".

Flying foxes are closely related to bats and differ from their conspecifics only in the shape of the snout and eyes and the fact that, unlike bats, they do not make use of ultrasound to orient themselves. Worldwide there are about 200 known species of flying foxes, which are native to Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania, where they are an important part of the ecosystem as they feed on nectar and pollen and can transport the pollen in their fur over long distances. Flying foxes thus have a similar function to bees and contribute to the growth of primeval forests.
