Installation Notes
Before Installing a New Power Steering Pump* Ensure you have the recommended OE fluid or equivalent.
* Check hoses for cracking, lack of flexibility and leakage. Replace hoses as necessary.
* NOTE: Replacing hoses that are 5 years old or have 100,000 miles on them is recommended due to deterioration of the inner lining of the hose.
* This installation guide is meant for general use only. For specific vehicle applications refer to the vehicle repair manual.
Removing the Original Pump1.Disconnect the negative battery cable for safety.
2.Remove engine belt and any other parts that will interfere with the removal of the hoses, pump or pulley.
3.Disconnect the power steering return and pressure lines. Drain fluid into an approved container. If hoses are being reused flush lines with OE approved fluid or cleaner and clean the connections. Cap the hoses to prevent contamination.
4.Loosen pump/bracket mounting bolts. On some models the removal of the power steering pulley will have to occur prior to mounting bolt removal. (Note below.)
5.Remove pump from vehicle.
6.Refer to vehicle repair manual for approved pulley puller to remove and install pulley on the pump with pressed on pulley. For pumps with bolt on pulleys loosen nut on power steering pump shaft. Align the pump shaft with the pulley appropriately on new pump. Refer to manufactures specifications for tightening nut on pulley.
7.If vehicle is equipped with remote reservoir check for contamination and replace or clean as necessary.
Installing a New Power Steering Pump1.Remove and transfer all switches, sensors, brackets, retaining hardware and special parts not supplied with replacement unit; clean and repair or replace as needed.
2.Install pump and hardware onto vehicle. Install pulley if necessary.
3.Check for proper pulley alignment, and proper tensioner operation.
4.Reinstall the clean and flushed power steering hoses and new O-rings for proper seal.
5.Reinstall belt at this time and check for alignment issues.
Bleeding the Power Steering System1.Fill the pump fluid reservoir to the proper level and let the fluid settle for at least 1 minute.
2.Start the engine and let it run for a few seconds, then turn the engine off.
3.Add fluid if necessary.
4.Repeat the above procedure until the fluid level remains constant after running the engine.
5.Start the engine. Slowly turn the steering wheel right and left until lightly touching the stops.
6.Stop engine, check the fluid level and add fluid if necessary.
7.If the fluid is extremely foamy, allow the vehicle to stand for a few minutes until air bubbles disappear and repeat the above.
Note: A vacuum bleeding procedure may be necessary in some cases when the above procedure is not completely affective.
