This addressed cover commemorates the Splashdown and Recovery of the MA-8 space flight. The "Sigma 7" space capsule with astronaut Wally Schirra aboard was launched on 10/03/1962 from Cape Canaveral, FL at 8:15 AM. Astronaut Schirra orbited the earth 6 times and was weightless for over 9 hours during the flight. He was the 3rd US astronaut to orbit the earth. The capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean about 5:30 PM and was recovered by helos from the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge (CVS-33). This cover has a hand stamp cachet from the USS Enterprise ( CVAN-65) and cancelled on board the Enterprise which was the Prime Recovery Ship for the Atlantic.
