Kilns California Pottery featuring the renowned American humorist, Will Rogers.
About Vernon Kilns Pottery. Vernon
Kilns made collectors plates for hundreds of cities and states in the
United States, some organizations and institutions, and some for foreign cities and countries. Vernon Kilns closed its doors permanently in the early 1950s.
According to
Bill Stern (2001), Vernon Kilns was one
of the
well known "Big Five"
of the Southern California Pottery group (p. 42, California
Pottery: From Missions to Modernism). Please see Maxine Feek Nelson's Collectible Vernon Kilns: Identification and Value Guide for more information about Vernon Kilns California Pottery.

- Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, Colorado Springs
- Hall of Fame Monument, Washington, D.C.

The back of the
plate
is inscribed under glaze with the wording:
WILL ROGERS
achieved a unique position
in the hearts of his fellow
Americans. He was born November
4, 1879, near Claremore, Oklahoma, and
worked his way up from the cattle ranges
to become famous as a humorist, a philosopher
a writer, a world traverler, a star on the lecture platform, on the stage and in motion pictures. His homely wisdom and philosophy reminded the men in high places that they were simple folks like the rest of us, and so strong was his faith in his country and his people, it is not surprising that America came to rest upon him for his strength and support. On August 15, 1935, when the news came from a little Alaskan village that a plane had crashed and that Will Rogers was gone, for most Americans it was as though a personal friend had been lost. His statue will stand as a reminder to our children and to our children's children that good deeds do not die, nor ever can die. That gentleness and kindness and compassion for humanity are things everlasting.
The vintage transfer
plate
has
the Vernon Kilns "Ultra"-style
rim featuring cowboy (branding iron, long horn steer, lariat ropes, spurs) and airplane (he was killed in a small plane crash in Alaska) themes.
