A fascinating & attractive high quality vintage glass bowl showing a horse race scene. The glass is crystal clear & has a loud ring when flicked with a fingernail. The design which is composed of frosted white with red details is overlaid on the glass. We do not know when or where or by what company this vintage glass bowl was made. We inherited the bowl from my father who was a big horse racing fan & attended a lot of horse races from the early 1950's (if not earlier) to the 1970's. I used to go to the horse races with him from the 1950's-1970's. He may have also gone to horse races in the 1940's. But, I am not certain of that.

He usually went to the Preakness at Pimlico from 1963 to the 1970's & also went to many of the Belmont Stakes races in the same period. But, he never attended the Kentucky Derby. In any event, I do not know when or where he obtained this bowl. Looking at the bowl one thing strikes me immediately in that there are 8 horses in the race on the bowl which was often the number of horses in the Preakness race in the period that he used to go there.

So, it occurred to me that perhaps (?) there is some chance that this bowl was put out in connection with a specific race. However, this is just conjecture on my part & the scene may be generic & not in reference to any specific race. We were thinking that perhaps the positioning of the eight horses on the bowl shows the positions of finish in some specific race. We are thinking that the horses with the numbers 8,3,6,1, would have been the first four to finish on the bowl.

We did check a few years of Pimlico Preakness results for which we had programs including 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1969. We found that in 1969 #8 (Candy Spots) did win the Preakness. However, #4 (Chateaux Gay) was second. So, that eliminates those five years of the Preakness as having any direct relationship to the bowl. Probably all the years of the Preakness (as well as the Belmont) should be checked to see if there might be any direct relationship to the bowl. But, we do not have access to the additional info. Perhaps someone with more research might have success in gleaning additional info to shed light on it.

We have done a lot of research & have not been able to find another example of this bowl. A very handsome & appealing horse race design. We know some, visually less appealing glass items connected with horse racing can sell for thousands of dollars. But, because of not personally being able to connect this bowl design with any specific major race, we are listing it at a modest price.

There are three extremely minor tiny surface wear points within the recessed area under the base. There is one minute chip on the top border (above horse #5) which is 1/8 inch by 1/16 inch by approximately 1/32 inch deep. Otherwise, the bowl is in crisp mint condition & appears to have never had any use. The diameter across the top is 6 5/8 inches & the height is 4 1/4 inches. The diameter across the entire base is 5 inches & the diameter across the footed part of the base is 3 5/8 inches. The weight is 1 pound & 7.7 ounces.

Please examine the photos closely & purchase based on your own judgement as to condition & value.
