This boldly drawn black pen and ink on pale blue paper study of a muscular bearded male figure measures 23" x 19" framed; 8 1/4" x 5 3/8" wide (actual) and is signed lower right  I. R. Pereira.  Irene Rice Pereira (1902-1971) was a painter, author, and poet who pursued her early art training at the Museum of Modern Art and Art Student's League in New York City.  In the 1930's-40's she was an avid proponent of Bauhaus principles in the US and went on to help found Design Laboratory in NYC.  Her works are to be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney and the Smithsonian Institution.  The work is stable with minor cockling at the top hinges and some age toning/spotting on the paper.  The frame is a late 20th c. limed oak example and the drawing is housed behind UV filter plex using acid-free materials.
