USS Pompano SS-181 memorial submarine cover honoring this brave World War II 298 foot long Porpose Class diesel sub commissioned on June 12, 1937. She was built at the Mare Island Navy Yard.

She was lost on 17 Sept 1943 off Japan. It appears she sunk a mine on that date. The proud vessel was credited with sinking many enemy ships. 

The postmark from Mare Island, CA  dated Dec 10, 1980. The color photo cachet #2831 of the actual submarine was prepared by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964. Cover franked with a 15 cent Flag stamp.
