Abdi, a Somali-born researcher, compares the experiences of one group of Somali refugees and migrants who traveled to three different countries--the UAE, South Africa, and the United States. After overcoming the risks of migration and reaching their respective destinations, she notes that success depends less on achieving their initial goal of citizenship than on how the receiving country’s economic, political, and social dynamics align with the migrant’s racial, gender, and religious sense of self. Thus, it appears that it is the feeling of belonging in the broadest possible sense that most profoundly colors the migration experience. She finds that migrants’ evaluations of their own experiences run the gamut from jannah (heaven) on earth to deep disappointment, and alienation. Annotation ©2015 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR ()
