France is the birth place of tempered glass. In 1929, Achille Verlay, who worked for glassmaker St-Gobain (a company founded in 1665 as royal glassmakers to Louis XIV) developed a technique for tempering glass, using a heating oven and cooling jets of air. This company registered the Duralex brand in 1945, and I believe, bought out and took over Vereco.
