Here we have two more unusual covers and a wrapper bearing the 8-cent Ulysses Grant stamp from the 1920s. One is a solo usage on a wrapper to Scotland, one is a perfinned solo usage and one is on a registered envelope. All seem to be Scott 640, the 11 x 10.5 perforated variety. They have bumps, etc., from postal handling, some of it international. The wrapper is somewhat stained in places and torn from opening at the back. The registered cover has a small tear at the top on the back.

1. An elusive solo usage on a wrapper from Haverhill MA to Scotland. As an undated oval circular handstamp was used as per regulations for a printed matter usage, the date is not known. The publication was sent to Mr./ G Norman, Eastriggs, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Given the amount paid it appears the publication must have been at least several ounces. Checking of rates would probably repay the effort here.

2. A Hart Schaffner & Marx corner card cover with perfinned stamp to the American Felt Co., 4th Avenue, NYC. The perfin for the famous Chicago clothing firm is, unsurprisingly, HSM. This is a solo airmail rate, catalogue value $8 in my somewhat outdated Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue. The stamp is tied by a Chicago, Ill Air Mail 50 machine cancel of Jun 21 1933.. The cover bears a winged globe airmail handstamp and this service is typed on the cover as well.

3. A small registered cover from G. Geysel, Closter NJ to a Mr F. Dawson, c/o Mrs Hodson, Rockridge, Greenwich CT. The cover has two 5c West Point stamps, which is fitting as Grant was a West Point graduate. The reverse has Cloisters registered handstamps of Feb 28 1938 tying an unusual printed address label and a Greenwich registered handstamp of Mar 1. The franking is an unusual but logical way to pay the total of 18 cents, including 15 for registration.

A good group of interesting usages of this stamp that would benefit from research.

The postage costs on this item are higher than I would like and, after leaving them unchanged for several years, I have raised them slightly in line with the 2023 postage rates. I use good British stamps on all my mailings, which are hand cancelled at my village post office, and these should result in collectable stamps for the buyer. I advise that items costing more than $40 be sent via tracked post and cannot be responsible for such items sent by ordinary post.

As I have some fixed-price lots, anyone who makes a purchase might want to look at them before paying. If you buy more than one item, please wait for my invoice so I can combine postage

When payment is received by teatime British time (it is usually dished up about 4:30) I normally post the item the next morning. Our village post office is closed on Saturdays, however, so if you pay on Friday the item will not go out until the following Monday.
