James Earle Fraser’s design for the Buffalo Nickel was approved by the administration of President William Howard Taft in 1913. It replaced the Liberty Head Nickel and would go on to be one of America’s greatest coin designs of the 20th century. It was so popular that the US Mint revived it in 2006 for the gold bullion American Gold Buffalo Series. It is also popularly used by private mints on both silver rounds, silver bars, and copper bars.
