WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness
Get ready for another round of war between humans and orcs as the epic struggle for control of Azeroth continues in WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness, a real-time strategy game from Blizzard Entertainment. The same protagonists last seen in the original WarCraft: Orcs and Humans go at it again, but with new and enhanced weapons, more creatures, and an expanded fantasy game world encompassing land, sea, and air.
Both orc and human perspectives are supported through an equal division of the game's 28 campaign scenarios. The game contains new features such as the "fog of war" option that elevates strategic planning to a higher level, much larger maps, and combined-arms tactics. New units in the sequel include elven archers, gryphons, death knights, battleships, airships, dragons, and more.
WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness provides the player with two interface and preference choices for gameplay. The first configures keyboard and mouse commands to replicate functionality of the style used in WarCraft: Orcs and Humans that allowed automatic centering on the mini-map by clicking the right mouse button. The second configuration replaces that functional key press by giving the player the capability to induce automatic commands instead, with the loss of auto-centering on the mini-map.
Diablo
The intricate town and many dungeon levels in Diablo are dark, cold and scary. You do not want to be here. Your instincts are screaming at you to turn and run but your courage is holding you firm. The two-handed broad sword you hold in your hands -- just one of over 40 weapons -- backs up your courage and demands that you to stay. Sounds bounce off the dense stone walls making it next to impossible to judge the location of your enemies in this unforgiving dungeon. The magic spells you have learned in your travels are useless against these unseen enemies.
You listen closely...there's a scraping sound to the left and a thud to the right. The sound from the left closes in on you at an alarming rate and you leap backward to get out of the way of whatever is coming. A small, skinless, monkey-like creature stands before you. You've seen these things before -- seen what this creature, one of over 20 different types you've encountered, can do to an unprepared man, mage or rogue.
You make a pledge to yourself: stay focused, never let your guard down. Then you quickly attack the surprised creature. The swiftness of your attack catches the scavenger off guard and you waste no time in planting your sword in its lower-intestinal tract. This small but important victory, just one of many, gives you some much-needed experience in your quest to become stronger; a strength you'll need as you track down the ultimate arch-demon, Diablo!
So goes the action in Diablo, a role-playing excursion into the depths of the underworld. Using guile, stealth, magic and raw power that you develop along the way, you'll find yourself up to your elbows, literally, in demons, zombies, gargoyles and much worse. Over 200 monsters await you in this dark, dreary and destructive domain, lorded over by the fiend Diablo, the embodiment of all evil.
Whichever character you choose -- warrior, rogue or sorcerer -- you'll have a variety of weapons and spells at your disposal for the ultimate journey to eradicate the evil scourge Diablo. Standard role-playing attributes such as strength, magic, dexterity, vitality, life and mana will improve, along with resistance ratings in magic, fire and lightning, as the quest heats up. A wide range of items and weaponry, gems and scrolls, spells and shields await discovery on your journey to the inevitable confrontation with mankind's worst enemy.
StarCraft
Following the success of their earlier games (namely WarCraft and Diablo), Blizzard Entertainment presents StarCraft, a real-time strategy space epic. Those familiar with the WarCraft series should feel at home here, as the interface and control scheme are similar to those of WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness. However, this is where the similarities end.
In StarCraft, there are three unique races to choose from, different in almost every way. The Terrans, who might be described as "hillbillies in space," represent the human race. They are a group with adaptable machinery and powerful, weapon-ready units. The second race is the Zerg, an organic-based alien race that spawns larvae from its creepy colonies. They have the ability to multiply quickly, creating safety in numbers. Zerg larvae can mutate into different kinds of structures and units. The Protoss are the most profound of the three races, relying on long-term strategies and advanced, almost mystical machinery.
Each race offers distinct strengths and weaknesses, and each calls for a different style of play. Unlike the single-player campaigns in WarCraft (which had two effectively similar races), the three campaigns in StarCraft must be played in order, as they are each a part of a larger tale. The story is of epic scale, beginning with the Terrans, then moving on to the Zerg, and finishing with the Protoss. Each race has its own campaign and plot line, but they all flow together as one big story.
Multiplayer options are supported through Blizzard's BattleNet servers. Those who think they're good enough can test their battle skills against other human players online. There are also options that allow players to team up and fight against the computer's armies.
