Bourbon Coffee originates from the Bourbon varietal of Arabica coffee beans, which has grown wild in Rwanda for over a century. Bourbon beans are known for their deep, buttery chocolate flavors, as well as their sweetness and very light fruit overtones. They yield well-balanced coffees and are less common than other types of coffee beans as Bourbon plants generally carry fewer coffee cherries per plant than other varieties.

Most of the plantations in the country are fairly high and are usually situated somewhere between 4,000 and 6,500 feet above sea level. This gives the coffee plants a nice, high altitude to grow in that is perfect for producing excellent beans. The local growing season typically begins in either September or October and continues until harvesting takes place between March and July. Within those months, the harvesting tends to peak from May on.

Our Farms
Our coffee is grown and cultivated in the district of Karongi, on the Eastern Bank of Lake Kivu in the Western province of Rwanda.

The Coffee is grown at an elevation of 5900 - 6500 feet above sea level. The elevation and stable climate create the rich fruit flavours that you taste. The sun shines year-round, providing a subtropical cool climate, that is the perfect environment for coffee.

Our coffee is meticulously selected from a small group of farms. These farms are led by remarkable and resilient women that make up 80% of all workers.

Our Process
We purchase our green coffee beans directly from farmers who are trained in the growing methods of specialty coffee. We buy directly from the co-operatives and local farmers in Rwanda to ensure freshness and fairness. With our personal connection to the Country, boots on the ground, and a direct source to washing stations we can guarantee a great product at a great price.

Our beans shipped from our direct relationships on the ground in Africa. This ensures transparency and means we can offer Direct Trade. Once in Canada, we work closely with our wholesale partners and top roasters to ensure they are educated in the proper technique to draw the most out of our highly rated bean.
