This 465 foot repair ship was built as a collier in 1907-1908 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She was

converted into a fleet repair ship in 1912-1913

She was deployed to Hawaii in the Spring of 1940, and was present during the 1941 enemy air attack. She was moored next to the USS Arizona!  She took two enemy bombs and was forced to ground to avoid sinking. Her skipper was Capt. Cassin Young who earned the Medal of Honor in this difficult situation.

The proud vessel served in the Pacific Theater and earned two WW II Battle Stars. She was scrapped in 1950. See her web pages for the details of her design, construction and service history in the South Pacific.
