Description:
The IBM SAN48B-5 switch with up to 48 port 16 Gbps FC and 768 Gbps total bandwidth is designed to handle virtualized cloud storage networking and SAN requirements of an enterprise data center.

The IBM System Storage SAN48B-5 (2498-F48) is a 1U height rack mount enclosure with Ports on Demand scalability from 24 to 36 to 48-ports in 12-ports increments. Each port offers auto sensing and self-negotiation to the highest speed (2, 4, 8, or 16 Gbps) supported by the attached server, storage, or switch, as well as self-configuration as F_ports, M_ports, E_ports, or EX_ports. The base function of the SAN48B-5 switch includes 24 activated ports, Fibre Channel fabric services, Advanced Zoning, Full Fabric, Fabric Watch, Web Tools, and Enhanced Group Management (EGM). The SAN48B-5 enclosure contains one system board and two integrated, replaceable and hot-swappable, redundant power supplies with two built-in fans to generate necessary airflow to cool the whole system.

Non-blocking Fibre Channel ports with each port that can operate at 2, 4, 8, 10, or 16 Gbps link speed. These switches use hot-pluggable, industry-standard Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP or SFP+), LC connector fiber optic transceivers, supporting Short-Wave Length (SWL), Long-Wave Length (LWL), and Extended Long-Wave Length ELWL). Actual distance depends on fiber-optic cables and port speed.

The fiber optic cables, Ethernet cables and RJ45 port serial cables are located at the front of the switch. AC power input cables are inserted and removed from the back of the switch.

On the front of the unit, there are three connections (one RS-232 RJ45, one Ethernet RJ45, and one USB port). The Ethernet RJ45 port connection provides a 10/100BaseT port for a full system management console interface. The RS-232 RJ45 port connection provides a serial port interface for setting the switch's IP address and to restore the switch to factory defaults. The USB port facilitates easy firmware upgrades and downloads of system log files (such as 'SupportSave' output) for further problem/source determination and resolution.
Integration of Fabric Watch, SNMP and a SMI-S API expose enhanced status reporting capabilities of the switch through all the standard management interfaces, including SNMP, the SMI-S API, WEBTOOLS, and the command line interface.

SAN48B-5 can be managed using the IBM Network Advisor V11.1 to provide unified, end-to-end management of data center fabrics - from storage ports on networked storage systems to Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) attached to physical or virtualized servers.
