VICTORIAN DRESS 1880 BROWN VELVET DAY DRESS, MUSEUM DEACCESSION

This is an attractive day dress.  A regal light brown 1 piece dress made of heavy weight velvet, machine and hand stitched.

Recently de-accessioned from the Rochester historical museum in New York state. The gown still retains it's original Museum ID catalog tag, inside as well as identification string tags. The name of the person that wore and donated the gown is written on an inside waist label tag and reads "Dress of Mrs. H.H. Warner, about 1870.

The bodice of this dress is decorated with a high neck printed gossamer ribbon trim collar around the neckline. Around the waist it is adorned with a black gossamer ribbon with back bow and with long streamers. The inner tan cotton bodice has fabric covered button front closure that extends downward to the hem line. The inner cuffs are decorated with floral printed gossamer ribbon.  The top of sleeves also is trimmed with gathered floral printed gossamer ribbon to give a puff look.

The dress is fully lined with tan cotton with fabric covered buttons. The sleeves have a very slight curve and tapering at the elbow to the wrist.

The back is gathered with fullness with cartilage pleating in the back for a nice fall and bustle effect. The rear puff enhances the outfit nicely. The skirt is in very good condition.

 BODICE:

Bust 30-1/2",

Neck 15",

Waist 29",

Sleeve Length 20",

Across shoulder 11",

Front skirt length 56-1/2",

Back length 60".

Condition: The dress is in good condition.  The printed gossamer ribbon on shoulders have shredded, as well as neck collar and cuffs. Velvet has darkened with age and true color can be seen in cartilage pleating, some fading to velvet. No underarm discoloration. A small opening in seam in front, an easy fix.  Overall the gown needs to be cleaned to refresh, some dark dingy dust discoloration on fold marks. I believe some type of fabric ran down both sides of the front and only seam stitch marks can be seen. No stains, no repairs that I saw, and fabric is sturdy and wearable.

A truly grand display dress/gown or for study or for display.
