VICTORIAN TWO PIECE TRAINED BUSTLE SILK GOWN, 1870s

This is an attractive reception gown of the 1870s period, that a mid to upper class woman would wear.

A regal moire silk satin 2 piece in construction bustled gown with a long train back sweep. Cream colored with a changeable light copper colored moire silk satin in a bustled two-piece dress with fitted bodice with pleated back bustle/polonaise with two rear wide double long streamers enhancing the train.

The bodice opens at the back with original its original fabric covered button closure, piping at shoulders sleeves and double piping around bottom edges of bodice. Having curved short three quarter bell sleeves trimmed with ruching and with a wide net tulle netting on lower sleeves. Attached white tulle net ruffled accents around neck opening and edged with black velvet ribbon. Collar and cuffs trimmed with copper colored changeable silk moiré. Sleeves are accented with gathered small rows of ruffles.
The bodice is lined with a tan plain polished cotton and has 7 fabric covered whale bone baleen stays.

The long regal training skirt is beautifully draped with gathers of generous pleating at back waist to give a fullness puff down the back for a beautiful bustle effect fall. It is lined with tan plain polished cotton. Trimmed with multiple tiered ruffles alternating in color. On left side of skirt there are diagonal folding of material. Stiff cotton material around inner hemline. Has hook and eye closure in back of skirt. Unlabeled.

CONDITION
In structurally very good condition. The bodice is lined in a fine tan polished cotton in very good condition.

SOILING SPOTS ON BODICE
Small light area of underarm soiling in the bodice lining and lightly can be seen outer fabric. The bodice has large bust enhancers sewn into the bodice. No repairs. The necklines tulle netting is rough, and at one time had a black velvet ribbon sewn around the neckline, it now is detached and is included.

SOILING SPOTS ON SKIRT
The skirt's lining is in very good condition. No holes, one faint brown stain. All staining are stable and not disintegrating the material. No repairs. Overall in very good sturdy condition.

PROVENANCE
Clothing from the estate of William Insco Buchanan (September 10, 1853 – October 17, 1909) who was an American diplomat. On January 26, 1894, President Grover Cleveland (the former mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York appointed Buchanan United States Minister to Argentina. Buchanan was chosen by John G. Milburn, president of the exposition, as the exposition was planned with a Latin American theme and they wanted someone who knew the South American countries well Buchanan was Director General of the Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo, New York from May 1 through November 2, 1901, and is credited with the construction, operation, and dismantling of the exposition. His ancestors still resides in the same home in Buffalo, New York and all clothing were stored in the attic of this ancestral home.
