The 315th Air Division was a unit of the United States Air Force (USAF) that existed from 1949 to 1991. It played a significant role during the Cold War and participated in various military operations.

The 315th Air Division was initially activated as the 315th Air Division (Defense) on August 26, 1948, and was stationed at Mitchel Air Force Base, New York. Its mission was to provide air defense for the northeastern United States. The division was responsible for the command and control of interceptor aircraft units and radar stations in its area of responsibility.

During the early 1950s, the division transitioned to a more offensive role and was redesignated as the 315th Air Division (Strategic Fighter) in 1952. It became responsible for the training and operational readiness of strategic fighter units equipped with long-range jet aircraft, such as the F-86 Sabre and later the F-101 Voodoo.

In 1966, the 315th Air Division was redesignated again as the 315th Air Division (Special Operations). It was assigned to the Pacific Air Forces and relocated to Tachikawa Air Base, Japan. The division's mission shifted to supporting special operations forces in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. It controlled various squadrons and detachments involved in unconventional warfare, psychological operations, and combat search and rescue.

In 1969, the division moved to Naha Air Base, Okinawa, where it continued its special operations mission until its inactivation in 1971. The 315th Air Division was reactivated in 1985 as the 315th Tactical Airlift Wing at Howard Air Force Base, Panama, and was responsible for tactical airlift operations in the region.

With the end of the Cold War and the reduction of U.S. military presence in Panama, the 315th Air Division was inactivated on September 30, 1991. Its legacy and lineage are carried on by the 315th Airlift Wing, an Air Force Reserve unit based at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, which operates C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.
