GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION

This sale is for a vintage edition entitled “Stonehenge Decoded,” by Professor Gerald S. Hawkins in collaboration with John B. White, illustrated with 12 photographic plates and 15 maps/plans/diagrams.

It was published by Fontana/Collins, of London in May 1972 and is the second impression of the 1970 FIRST PRINTING in Fontana Books.

On Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, in southern England stands an arrangement of stones that has been the subject of countless studies, poems and legends dating back beyond the days of King Arthur and his court.  What did this group of stones signify to its architects? Was it a city of the dead? A Druid altar of sacrifice? Or something else?

It took a 20th century astronomer, and modern computer techniques to unravel the ancient mystery.  He conducted a detailed examination of Stonehenge and the astronomical alignments of the stones.  All the evidence indicated that Stonehenge was a sophisticated and brilliantly conceived astronomical observatory, used by three different groups of people over a 400 year period beginning around 1900 B.C.

As the author recreates his dramatic discovery he tells of the mythology that has grown up around the site and of the techniques employed to bring the stones across hundreds of miles of sea and land to their resting place.

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs.  However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the World).

These costs are a direct result of:

“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”

If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.

Unwinsbooks always obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail.  Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be sent by courier (customer will be informed).
